The Independent Evaluation Office (IEO) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is looking for a Research Officer / Senior Research Officer (A09, A10, A11) to join our team.
The IEO is a small unit that operates independently of IMF management and at arm’s length from the Executive Board. It produces about two evaluations per year on issues related to the IMF, with the objective of supporting the IMF Executive Board in its oversight function, strengthening the learning culture of the IMF, and enhancing transparency. The primary assignment of the Research Officer / Senior Research Officer is to undertake analytical and data work in support of IEO evaluations.
Responsibilities will include:
- Support IEO economists, evaluators, and consultants in conducting quantitative data analysis utilizing econometric and other statistical tools.
- Prepare charts and tables, accessing and manipulating macroeconomic data from a wide range of sources, including IFS, OECD, WB, INS, BEL, Current Economic Indicators, WEO, WEFA, Haver, DataStream, Reuters, Bloomberg and internet, among others.
- As needed, support for AI and text analysis work.
- Support economists, evaluators, and consultants in retrieving and accessing documents, arranging, and keeping records of interviews, as well as preparing background papers.
- Support economists, evaluators, and consultants in conducting qualitative analysis, for instance by conducting desk reviews of IMF documents and participating in interviews.
- Support tasks that require the application of evaluation methodologies such as literature review, semi-structured interviews, surveys, and text analysis.
- Support outreach efforts for IEO evaluations, as well as collect and organize information received as a result of this outreach.
- Assist with the production of IEO documents, including by engaging with the IMF publication team and outside vendors to arrange for and oversee layout and printing.
- Selected candidate must be able to work independently under minimum supervision and be accountable for the accuracy of both data and programs.
Qualifications include:
- Advanced degree in Macroeconomics, Finance, Statistics, or related field; or university degree supplemented by at least six years of professional experience.
- Strong analytical, quantitative and computer skills. Proficiency in software applications, e.g. MS Office (specifically Excel and Word) is required.
- Proficiency in packages such as Stata, Eviews, and Matlab, together with knowledge of statistical and econometric techniques and macroeconomic relationships, is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of IMF policies and operations is required. Experience with and understanding of evaluation approaches and methods are highly desirable.
- Excellent command of English, written and oral.
