Understanding Digitalisation: Case Study of the Kafr El-Sheikh Wastewater Expansion Project

Published by: Independent Evaluation Department, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development
SDGs: SDG 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation

This knowledge paper examines the digitalisation components of the Kafr El-Sheikh Wastewater Project, in light of the EBRD’s Approach to Accelerating the Digital Transition (the ‘Digital Approach’).

The objective is to highlight lessons from the Bank’s experiences with digitalisation, which in turn will support the ongoing implementation of the Digital Approach. The project demonstrated both some of the benefits of digitalisation, with respect to increased resource efficiency, increased productivity, and better data visibility, as well as some of the risks. In particular, the Kafr El-Sheikh project highlighted the challenges of implementing digital solutions in low-capacity contexts.
