Discussing family farming in the Brazilian semi-arid
Last week, State Secretaries in charge of family farming policies in the nine States of North-eastern Brazil met in Belo Horizonte to discuss how to better coordinate policies to support family farming in the country's semi-arid region, known as sertao. IFAD is a key player in organizing this policy dialogue forum which provides the opportunity for participants to share experiences and discuss how to scale up innovations tested in public investment programs in Brazil, including IFAD-funded operations. Over the years, these operations have focused on promoting family farmers adaptation to semi-arid conditions in the sertao – home to millions of poor rural people. The event was attended, among others, by Brazil's federal Minister of Agrarian Development, Patrus Ananias, and IFAD's Country Manager for Brazil, Paolo Silveri.
